City of Malibu Retrofit (Code Compliance) Requirements When Selling

When selling a home in the incorporated city of Malibu, the following items should be checked by a independent third party retrofitter for full compliance. This ensures all parties, including agents and their brokers, will be covered in case of loss, injury or death after the close of escrow.

City of Malibu requires working smoke detectors in each bedroom, bedroom hallway, and on each floor. Smoke detectors can be either battery type or hard wired type. Seismic earthquake valve on gas meter is required. Contact the city of Malibu regarding permits for the earthquake shut off valve. Carbon monoxide detector on each level at least. Hot Water heater tank must be double strapped. Tankless water heaters do not need to be strapped. Low flow toilets and showerhead in each bathroom. Call the city Building and Safety Dept at 310-456-2489 ext. 390 or at MBuilding@malibucity.org for more information. A city sewer inspection may be required, though that is outside the scope of code compliance when selling. Contact the city regarding sewer inspections. City information is located below.
