Where to place smoke detectors ?
Place a working smoke detector in each bedroom, and the hallway outside of the bedroom(s). Do not place smoke detectors near the kitchen. We need at least one working smoke detector on each floor (living areas). Hence a four bedroom two story home requires six working smoke detectors. In most cities, the smoke detectors can be either hard wired or battery type. Install smoke detectors on ceilings or on the wall near the ceiling.
Where to place carbon monoxide detectors?
We need at least one CO – carbon monoxide – detector on each floor. If the home is very large, multiple CO detectors are advised. They can be place in bedroom hallways, living rooms, or other living spaces. The specific gravity of Carbon Monoxide is 0.9657 (with normal air being 1.0), this means it is roughly the same as air. CO detectors can generally be placed either high or low in a room, near the floor, on the ceiling, or anywhere you can reach.
What brands work the best?
Kidde and First Alert are your best bang for your buck. Do not buy no name or weird named detectors from Ebay or Amazon, they usually do not work out of the box.
