10 year battery type smoke detectors are great, but sometimes they will not shut up. When the beeping will not stop, we have help for you.
We recently had a Kidde 10 year smoke detector that malfunctioned and keep beeping, even though it was only one year old. Why did it malfunction? That we do not know. But here is what we did to make it stop. Try these steps in this order.

1 – Make sure the detector is secure on its bracket and fully twisted tight on the bracket. Also make sure there is nothing holding down the test button unnecessarily. If still beeping……..
2 – Do as the instructions tell you on the back of the detector say, and activate the ‘kill switch’. This will (or should) completely discharge the 10 year battery inside the unit. If still beeping……

3- Take a hammer and break the thing into pieces. You would think this is easy, but many times it is not. If destroyed and it stll beeps……
4- Pour liquid dish soap on it and soak in water. This will short out all circuitry inside the detector.

5- If it still beeps, you have a ‘zombie’ detector, and boy do you have a real problem! Report that one in the section below.
