There are mainly three different types of EQ or seismic earthquake shut off valves on the market today, and they all do about the same. Here they are:
Brand Name – Little Firefighter
Most popular in So California, 90% of all So Cal home have this unit. Easy to install and easy to re-set if it is accidentally triggered.
Brand Name – Safety Solutions
Least popular in So California. Easy to install and easy to re-set if it is accidentally triggered. Self contained in the plastic box that looks like the garden timer. Usually mistaken for something else. Red handle is a easy gas turn off in case of emergency. Rarely seen in So Cal. Attaches directly to structure, no need for bracket. The cover tends to come off easily and gets lost. Also easy for pranksters to shut off gas to a home or property by just turning the red lever. Usually cheaper to install than the other style valves.
Brand Name – Koso Valves
Very popular in So California – Can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Usually seen in condo projects and commercial installations. Also easy to install. Heavy gauge metal. The red cover turns orange over time due to the sun and heat and outdoor elements.
Note: Most seismic earthquake valves need to be attached to the structure by a mounted bracket or stabilizer bar per current plumbing codes at the time of installation. Always have a certified and state licensed plumber install any new seismic valve and not a handyman for liability reasons.
