Many installations of seismic earthquake shut off valves are less than perfect. Besides being unsightly, they also may be unsafe. Also they may not be to current plumbing code. Here are a few common mistakes we see that others have done in the Southern California area.
No bracket on valve connected to the structure as per code.
Valve mounted incorrectly. This is a vertical valve mounted horizontally, it won’t work in case of quake.
Wrong sized valve as compared to the line into the home, valve here is 3/4″
Piping not painted after install will rust
Too many pipes for what is needed.
Alas, it is always best to have a state licensed plumber, and not a handyman, install anything related to gas in your home. Only a state licensed plumber is certified to work on gas lines in California.
